The key idea is that the gas valve should respond directly to a heat demand from the thermostat. When the thermostat calls for heat, it completes the control circuit and energizes the gas valve so it opens to allow gas to flow to the burner. This immediate opening confirms the control system, wiring, and valve are functioning together to deliver fuel only when heat is requested, which is essential for safe and proper operation.

If the valve does not open when heat is called, that signals a fault in the thermostat circuit, safety interlocks, wiring, or the valve itself, and you’d need to diagnose where the break in the control chain is. Conversely, if the valve opens but ignition fails or if gas flows without a heat call, other system issues are at play, such as the ignition system or improper interlock operation.

While a valve being manually operable or hearing no sound might seem related, those aren’t reliable indicators of proper function. Valve action in response to a thermostat call is the clearest sign of correct operation.
